THE ROAD WE KNOW is a first-person account of seven young adults from the University of Botswana who travel around their nation with a bold message to save their generation from the HIV/AIDS epidemic ravaging the nation. The film is structured as a road trip, with flashbacks to the motivations and histories of each of these characters, all of whom have been affected by the epidemic. These young adults also introduce viewers to the setting and cultural practices of Botswana that have created the world's second-highest infection rate in one of Africa's most stable and prosperous nations. Most of these twenty-something adults have never before traveled around their country, nor have they traveled with others from such diverse backgrounds. They hail from Botswana's biggest cities and most rural villages, a colorful intersection of tribal and modern cultures. They are traveling to high schools across a sparsely populated country to present their message and counsel their younger peers. The road is long and takes them around a country the size of Texas to rural villages and towns, each with unique challenges. Facing cultural taboos and difficult travel, this small group sets out across the nation for five weeks with three tents, one truck, and a radical solution to save lives.
